Het hebben van een meer ethische trouwjurk die ook duurzaam is, is gemakkelijker dan je denkt en er zijn verschillende routes die je kunt overwegen.

Meestal kopen bruidswinkelketens of boetieks hun jurken bij in het buitenland gevestigde fabrikanten. Om echter echt te begrijpen hoe ethisch uw trouwjurk is, moet u verder denken dan de jurk en meer over de hele toeleveringsketen - van de teelt en productie van vezels tot de constructie van kleding. Om textiel te produceren zijn veel middelen nodig, zoals duizelingwekkende hoeveelheden water en energie. Afgezien van een bruidsjurk, verbruikt zelfs een eenvoudig katoenen T-shirt 2700 liter water bij de productie. Het is echter een vorm van plastic die is afgeleid van fossiele brandstoffen en het vereist dubbel zoveel energie als nodig is om katoen te produceren. Hoewel deze schijnbaar betaalbare trouwjurken de koper weinig kosten, hebben ze vaak een hoge prijs voor het milieu. Fossiele brandstoffen, die bij verbranding veel CO2 uitstoten, verwarmen de atmosfeer om klimaatverandering en een stijgende zeespiegel teweeg te brengen. Dus voordat je trouwjurk zelfs maar is ontworpen en aan elkaar genaaid, heeft deze al een vrij groot spoor van vervuiling en een aanzienlijke ecologische voetafdruk achter de rug.
Zijde is gemaakt van natuurlijke vezels, maar dat betekent niet dat het milieuvriendelijk of ethisch is. Voordat je zijden trouwjurk wordt gemaakt, moet het materiaal bijvoorbeeld worden geoogst van zijderupsen. De wormen worden gekweekt door zich te voeden met moerbeiboomstruiken totdat ze klaar zijn om hun cocons te vormen. Daarna wordt de mot levend gekookt in zijn huis en worden de vezels van de cocon geoogst voordat ze worden geweven tot een draaiende haspel. Het hele proces vereist een grote hoeveelheid water en kunstmest, waardoor de zijdeproductie ook een relatief grote ecologische voetafdruk heeft. Omdat zijde voornamelijk wordt gemaakt in China, India en de VS, moet het vervolgens naar een kledingfabriek worden vervoerd - vaak in een ander land - voordat het zijn weg vindt naar het land van verkoop, waar het nog meer koolstofemissies produceert.
Naast de milieueffecten van textielproductie is er ook de impact op de arbeiders in de industrie, die vaak werken voor oneerlijke lonen en onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden die hen blootstellen aan onveilige chemicali?n die hun huid en ademhalingssysteem kunnen aantasten.
Maar het is niet allemaal kommer en kwel met betrekking tot bruidsstof. Er bestaan ??duurzame, ethische en wreedheidsvrije alternatieven en er worden nog steeds nieuwe materialen ontwikkeld, maar die zal ik in mijn vervolg blogpost aanstippen. Maar voor nu zal ik bespreken hoe u bewuster kunt winkelen zonder iets nieuws te kopen.
